Certified Scrum Master shares his experience

Becoming a Certified Scrum Master can be easy. But being a Certified Scrum Master is a vocation and a duty. Development teams, stakeholders, and customers often rely on this Agile guru. There are problems in every project and many of the problems are caused by the project participants. Amanda Hart is a Certified Scrum Master. We sent her a few questions related to common and interesting issues in the Scrum teams. She wrote the answer to all the questions and was so kind as to share them with us.

Certified Scrum Master shares true professional experience

Hello! My name is Amanda Hart and I am a Certified Scrum Master. Thanks for the opportunity to post my professional views on your blog. Here are my answers to the questions you sent me.

The scrum meeting begins and a member of the Development team begins to ask questions to the other participants.

He can do it. To have balance, every day during the daily scrum meeting a different member of the development team can be a leader and ask questions. Reference: Certified Scrum Master shares best practices, https://projectmanagement.cloudaccess.host/certified-scrum-master-shares-best-practices/

You receive an email from the marketing department upstairs. As they do not know where the place where you are holding your Daily Scrum meeting is, they ask you to show it to them in advance so that they are not late.

I will return a polite email to them, indicating the location of the daily scrub meeting. I will emphasize, however, that these meetings are only for Scrum. Reference: A certified Scrum Master shares the Daily Scrum event, https://projectmanagement.freesite.host/a-certified-scrum-master-shares-the-daily-scrum-event/ The absence of outsiders during these meetings is part of the way Scrum works. The development team is self-organizing. He makes his own decisions, comments on tasks and difficulties, shares, and solves. Interference from outsiders will disrupt this. If you need any information from the marketing department, I will suggest that I meet with them or send the necessary email (s).

A representative of your client is on a business trip to your office, but only for a very short time. He will leave early in the morning tomorrow. 15 minutes before your meeting, a team member asks you to call him so that he can provide as much important information as possible while he is here.

I will remind my colleague from the Development team that the daily scrum meeting is only for our team. I will inform him that I will have a conversation with the Product Owner role and I will ask him to meet with the client’s representative. If information needs to be exchanged, the Product Owner will do so. The Product Owner can then tell the Divelp team things. The relationship between the customer and the development team is the task of the Product Owner role.

Your colleague is late for your Daily Scrum meeting and has sent the following email with answers to the usual team questions:

“Hello! Yesterday I was working on recovering the user password. It is not ready yet and I am continuing today. I think I will succeed by the end of the day. I encountered several problems, but I bypassed them quite flexibly.” Reference: Responsibilities of the Scrum Master role, https://projectmanagers.joomla.com/11-responsibilities-of-the-scrum-master-role.html

I will talk to my colleague and remind him that the Daily Scrum meeting is mandatory as a present for each member. Moreover, in his email, the colleague points out some problems. He may see bypassing them as a solution now, but it is not a solution at all. This may be a stumbling block in the future. The team needs to know about them. As their solution might suggest. Such things are subject to discussion and debate, and the role and place of the daily scrum are just that. I will ask the colleague to participate in the daily scrum meetings and not only to acquaint others with the course of their tasks and to share about problems encountered but to help with their knowledge, skills, and experience to solve problems posed by other members. During your Daily Scrum meeting, a colleague tells the others:

“Yesterday I was working on uploading the profile picture for users. Today I will create several automated tests with different common situations to make sure there will be no shoots. It turned out that the test server does not have libraries installed for all supported photo file formats. I will go down to the Development Operation colleagues today and ask them to put them on, and then I will tell you. In the meantime, know that you may encounter this problem as well. “

I will thank him for finding such a problem that can hinder the course of the iteration, as well as for sharing it with others. In order not to waste the time and speed of the team, I will suggest that I take on this task – very quickly. The sooner this problem is solved, the more obstacles will be saved for the team. The Certified Scrum Master and the Daily Scrum meeting

During your Daily Scrum meeting, a colleague tells the others:

“Yesterday I was in the designers’ room to discuss the graphics for the next sprint. Today I will integrate all the icons in the registration form. I think there will be a small problem, but I will manage.”

I will ask my colleague to tell me what he finds a possible problem. Sharing in front of others can provide a solution, it may turn out that this is not a problem, and it may save work that will affect their tasks in the future. This is part of the business value of the project. I will also invite him to follow the tasks in the current sprint. We will talk and act about the next sprint when we prepare it and it starts. Your Product Owner comes to your Daily Scrum meeting just before it ends and politely asks everyone to repeat what they have shared because after a while he will meet with a representative of the client, who has asked him for an up-to-date development situation.

I will remind him that the duration of the daily scrum is only 15 minutes. Coming to the end and asking for a repetition of what the participants said, the duration of the meeting will be disrupted. I will ask him to adhere to the established rules of work under scrum. I will acquaint him after the meeting with what has been commented on, and the development team must follow the established course of its tasks.

How did become a Certified Scrum Master?

I searched on the web about Scrum Master certification programs. I know it is now amazing story and it’s not something cool, but this is what actually happened. Everyone does it this way today. Open Google and type something like Best Scrum Master certification and you will find some nice info. If I remember right I found the BVOP Senior Scrum Master title on EduWiki.me. Reference: “Best Scrum Master Certifications for 2021 and 2022”, 2020, https://eduwiki.me/best-scrum-master-certifications-for-2021-and-2022/

Just before your Daily Scrum meeting, your director sent you the following email:

“Hello! Can colleagues from another department come to your daily team meeting to observe how your Scrum events are going? I promise they won’t interfere in any way.”

I will return a polite email to him that the daily scrum meetings are very short and have a super important purpose. They are only for the development team and because of the concentration of people, as well as to achieve the goal, even just the presence of outsiders as observers and listeners can distract the team. This will disrupt the process. I will offer to meet with the people in this department to tell them how the scrum works and answer all their questions. The scrum team should not be disturbed. Its productivity will suffer from this, and it – the business value. One of the members of the Development team asked your product owner to attend the meeting to share important information, but the others are strongly against it, as they believe that your Product Owner will understand important details about how they are implemented and this will disrupt Development. their harmony.

I will remind the team that the Product Owner can participate in the daily scrum meeting, especially since a member of the team needs his intervention. The team should not worry about this. The way they work and the tools they use should not be a secret. Learning these things from the Product Owner would not disturb the harmony in the development team – on the contrary, it would bring more information and explanation for things that may not be completely clarified. Which would hinder further work. I will reassure the team that the Product Owner role will only answer questions or provide more information, but it will not interfere in their work or ask them to be accountable (I will comment on this with him before the daily scrum).

Daily Scrum your meeting is running. Tomorrow is the last day of the sprint. There are a few User Stories left unfinished, which is certain that they cannot be completed by tomorrow.

I will try to guide the team to debate what the obstacles are and whether there is a useful move to address them. I will try to provoke them to decisions made by them. If you really can’t find user options to complete the story, they must fit on the task board at the top and will be taken over by the next iteration. At the end of the sprint, when the retrospective is done and I hope what difficulties the team has encountered, this should enter as a topic. At the beginning of the next scrum planning, this should also be taken into account and, if necessary, the cycling city should be recalculated.

A member of the Development team said that he tried all day yesterday to speed up the responses of your client’s marketing department. They take too long to answer and do not send him the information he needs to complete his work.

I will inform the Product Owner role in this problem. I will ask him to appeal to the client to deliver everything in time so as not to lose the concentration and pace of the development team is working on the tasks. The product is the one that must provide the necessary information for the smooth work of the development team on the part of the client. If the Product Owner is obstructed for some reason at some point, I could do the same.
